More about meetings
Amongst the events organised by Friends of Le Monde Diplomatique is our series of talks (in English) known as the Cafés Diplo.
Café Diplos provide an informal space for lively debate on political, social and environmental issues that may be marginalized by the mainstream media. We like to think of the Café Diplo as part of our overall effort to provide a space for independent thinking and to challenge "La Pensée Unique"of neo-liberalism.
As Friends of Le Monde Diplomatique, we tend to organise Café Diplos on those themes covered by the newspaper but we do not limit ourselves only to the thematic scope of Le Monde Diplomatique.
The format offers a guest speaker, usually a specialist in the topic under review, opening the event with a 30 - 40 minute talk. This is followed by a discussion which offers a chance for everyone attending to contribute, question and challenge. The discussion is chaired.
Café Diplos are from 6.45 - 8.45pm on Monday evenings, during the season, at The Gallery, 77 Cowcross Street, London, EC1M 6EL (near Farringdon Tube station). Doors open from 6.30pm. We hope you will join us with a glass of wine during the evening and, after the Cafe closes, perhaps consider continuing the discussions in a local pub.
Our calendar pageprovides exact dates as the Café Diplo is not run every Monday.
Our newsletter page still holds information from our past activities up to 2003, but has now been discontinued.
More about who we are
Additional information about the Le Monde Diplomatique Newspaper, and also of the Amis Le Monde Diplomatique with which we "The Friends" are associated can be found - here
Friends of Le Monde Diplomatique is the UK branch of Les Amis, and was founded in 1997. We support the distribution of the paper and the values it embodies in its editorial line; democracy, social justice, and the furthering of independent thought and action. In addition to running the Café Diplos throughout the year we also organise an Annual Conference.
We also link with other activist groups for specific purposes, and are part of a network of information sharing through contacts such as radio, TV, trade journals and the local press. For details on our links to other activities and groups please see our extensive links page
There is more information from past activities provided at our transcripts page.
Our organising team in London has recently been expanding, enabling us to better realise our goals, and we invite your active support in this process. If you would like to get involved, or just to come along to our events, we would be delighted to hear from you.
